This is a picture taken in 1904 by Berthold Laufer, a photographer and researcher taking a tour of China and documenting his experience. This piece is entitled "Eating Rice, China", and the man in it is unidentified. The reason I love this photo is that, defying the western tradition of unsmiling portraits, this man is simply happy to be eating rice and having his picture taken, and he shows it. It makes me smile to see him smile!
