Constructing the dome – 1857
The United States Capitol Dome may be America's most famous man-made landmark, but still, the 8,909,200 pounds of sculpted iron is much more than a simple physical representation – it's a symbol of freedom, equality, and the power of the people. However, this picture, taken by an unknown photographer in 1857, shows the Capitol before it was known for its current characteristics. I love this photograph because it reminds us that before we can be known as something, we must firstly be something.
